    The Northside Urban Coalition is a Drug Free Communities project of Hawthorne Neighborhood Coalition, focused on preventing youth substance use in North Minneapolis and educates them to build trust in authority, live stress free and maintain a safe living environment.

  • Beltrami Block Studios
    Beltrami Block Studios

    Beltrami Neighborhood Council recently provided funding to install four Block Studios in Beltrami, free of charge to interested residents or businesses.

    The Block Studio Project is a grassroots attempt to engage creative literacy through building and maintaining corner donation boxes of Arts & Crafts materials.  Each Studio also serves as walk by workspace and neighborhood art project.

    Meridian Food Forest

    Bancroft Neighborhood Association reported on their ongoing support for and maintenance of the Meridian Food Forest, a community garden. Bancroft is just one of many neighborhood organizations that support and maintain community gardens, rain gardens and pollinator gardens.

    Downtown Development

    Elliot Park Neighborhood, Inc. reported in their Phase I NRP evaluation that their investments of $4 million of Phase I NRP funds leveraged more than $150 million dollars in development.

    Several Northeast neighborhood organizations contributed NRP funds and collaborated with businesses and the City to plan and implement streetscape upgrades on Central Avenue.

    Eat Street

    The Whittier, Loring Park, and Stevens Square neighborhoods invested $287,000 in NRP funds in planning for and marketing the renovation of Nicollet Avenue from 15th Street to 28th Street. The investment leveraged additional public and private funds that brought new trees, new sidewalks, decorative iron and brick railings, and pedestrian level street lighting to a 1.2 mile stretch of Nicollet Avenue.

    Several neighborhoods contributed NRP funds and collaborated for re-opening the vacant Sears building first floor into a highly successful global marketplace.

    Northside Residents Redevelopment Council served a critical role in communicating with residents about the process of establishing a Historic District in the neighborhood, and helped educate residents about the requirements and impacts of the district.

    Armatage Neighborhood Association provided an excellent example of their support for the City’s rollout of organics recycling efforts by promoting drop-off sites and informing residents about how to sign up for curb-side pick up.

    Corcoran Neighborhood Association reported on the work of the Minneapolis Renters Coalition, formed through an alliance of neighborhood organizations to ensure that renters voices are heard. The Minneapolis Renters Coalition responded to the housing crisis faced by residents living in buildings owned by Steve Frenz.

    Hawthorne Neighborhood Council organized a series of neighborhood cafés on community health and well being. The dialogues were documented with video, and one of the outcomes was a home remedies book that encouraged exercise and healthy eating, and promoted home grown vegetables.

    Organics Recycling

    Tangletown Neighborhood Association reported on their work, like Armatage, to support the City’s organic recycling program. TNA and Lynnhurst Neighborhood Association held a joint kick-off event attended by more than 250 residents.

    Logan Park Neighborhood Association embarked on a process to bring residents and local businesses together for a first-of-a-kind community driven process to develop plans for the historic Quincy Street and several attached streets that have a unique character, including brick streets, warehouses, and many unique businesses that include breweries, art galleries, and many businesses in the creative industries.

    East Phillips Improvement Corporation started their annual Summerfest in one of the most diverse neighborhoods in the city. They organize the event in partnership with other local organizations such as Holy Rosary Church and East Phillips Park.

    Central Avenue Improvements

    Audubon, Holland and Windom Park invested NRP funds in pedestrian lighting for Central Avenue, a Business Watch Program to keep crime down, and banners with a new Central Avenue logo. Perhaps the most visible of the improvements are the 95 low-level pedestrian scale streetlights that span from 18th to 27th avenues NE - creating a safe, pedestrian environment and a link to rear parking areas.

  • Hennepin Avenue
    Hennepin Avenue Revitalization

    Lowry Hill organized a 7-neighborhood planning process that resulted in the Hennepin Avenue Strategic Plan and over $550,000 of NRP investments along the Avenue. Improvements included new pedestrian-level lighting, tree grates, benches, sidewalk improvements, and reconfigured entry points to the Avenue.

    Midtown YWCA

    Five neighborhoods invested more than $1 million of NRP funds in the construction of the $21 million Midtown YWCA Community and Urban Sports Center that provides youth activities, childcare and fitness programs to thousands of residents. Construction of the YWCA spurred development on this previously neglected stretch of Lake Street.
